Upcoming Book by Bear Grylls Retells the New Testament

In “The Greatest Story Ever Told,” which releases on June 19 in the U.K. and on July 22 in the U.S., Grylls offers first-person eyewitness accounts of people who knew Jesus. On Instagram last month, the adventurer shared a photo of the book, writing, “It’s genuinely been a life goal and life mission to write this book. If I had to pick one work achievement in my life, this would be it.”

“My dream is that every person on the planet gets introduced to this true, life-changing story of love, courage, sacrifice and rescue,” Grylls added. “I’m going out on a limb here (and risking looking a fool!) but I believe that after the Bible and Quran, this book can become the furthest reaching book in history!”

In a Christmas post last year, Grylls ruffled feathers by describing Jesus as a “Middle Eastern Refugee” and his mother, Mary, as a “young, poor, and no doubt terrified Palestinian girl.” After historians took issue with that characterization, Grylls deleted the post and provided an update.

Mary lived in “first-century Palestine,” he clarified, but “she was clearly Jewish.” Grylls added, “Mary, Joseph, and Jesus were forced to flee their homeland to escape Herod’s decree, living as refugees in Egypt. They were escaping Herod’s decree to kill all the young male babies in Bethlehem.”
