Grace Community Church in Sun Valley, California, recently provided an update on the health of Pastor John MacArthur, as well as on the church’s finances.
Following a procedure on his lungs, MacArthur, 85, is not expected to return to the pulpit for several months. And following a drop in giving, the church is reducing its budget by roughly 20%.
Staff Pastor Austin Duncan made the announcement.

“Hebrews 13:7 reminds us to remember those who led you, who spoke the Word of God to you, and consider the result of their conduct and to imitate their faith,” said Duncan. “For the past 20 years, I’ve had the same pastor, John MacArthur, and he’s become a mentor and a friend to me.”
“I love him dearly, and I know many of you feel the same way. You’ve been here maybe much longer than I have, or maybe you’re newer to our church. But we all love our pastor, and these months of convalescence have been difficult for us,” Duncan continued. “And as leaders have been going to his home and meeting with him in this season, one thing has been really clear: It’s been on his heart to be here with us and to speak to you as your shepherd.”
MacArthur’s recent procedure is the latest in a series of health challenges that have kept MacArthur from preaching. While MacArthur announced in April that he was ready to come “roaring back” to public ministry, this recent setback will force him to take more time to recover.
MacArthur did however pen a personal note to the congregation.
Reading the note, Duncan said, “As many of you know, I had a second procedure on my lungs last month. That procedure was successful, and I’m now back at home. The doctors are optimistic about my recovery, and I am eager to return to you once I regain my strength.”
“I anticipate that that will still be a few months away, but I wanted to convey my love for all of you and my love for this church,” the note continued. “Realizing my life and times are in the hands of the Lord, my desire is to be back at church as soon as possible.”

Regarding the church’s finances, MacArthur’s note said, “One of the consistent characteristics of Grace Church is that our people are always generous in their giving. Your affection for the church and your eagerness to support the ministry here is a reflection of your love for the Lord.”
