3 Former Gateway Church Elders Deny Wrongdoing, Seek Removal From Cindy Clemishire’s Lawsuit

Jury Trial in Civil Suit Slated for Next June

A Dallas County judge recently set Cindy Clemishire’s civil lawsuit for jury trial beginning on June 15, 2026. She and her father are seeking more than $1 million in damages.

Clemishire has said it took decades to realize she was a sexual abuse victim because Robert Morris wasn’t “mean” to her. At the time, he was a traveling preacher who sometimes stayed at Clemishire’s house.

Earlier this summer, Clemishire told the Dallas Morning News, “The person who abused me and the people who blatantly covered it up deserve to be held accountable.” She added, “My hope is that bringing awareness to my case will help other victims and survivors feel hope, because the person who did this to me—and the people who enabled him and covered it up for decades—are being held accountable.”

A preliminary hearing in Morris’ criminal case is scheduled for Sept. 4 in Oklahoma. If found guilty of all five charges, the 64-year-old former pastor faces up to 100 years in prison.

Regarding his retirement-funds lawsuit against Gateway Church, a Texas judge recently gave the two sides 30 days to choose an arbitration venue.

Since the scandal broke last summer, Gateway has experienced declines in attendance and giving. It also has laid off some staff members and cut back on weekend worship services. This month, Virginia Pastor Daniel Floyd will be installed as Gateway’s new senior pastor.
