Church Elder Barred From Receiving Communion Following Allegations of Years-Long Child Sex Abuse

Hahne said that Maxwell has not only been removed from his position as elder but “has also been suspended from participating in the sacrament of the Lord’s Supper.”

“You will not see Michael in church again without prior notification from me,” said Hahne. 

Referring to Maxwell’s family, Hahne said, “Like you, they are in a state of shock and grief. Their lives have been turned upside-down in a way that they could not have imagined possible.”

Hahne acknowledged that Maxwell “has been a friend, a spiritual mentor and a Sunday School teacher for many of us,” and said that Maxwell’s “duplicity is egregious. It is very difficult to know how to feel when we hear a report like this about someone so near to us.”

Redeemer Church has contracted Godly Response to Abuse in the Christian Environment (GRACE), a Christian organization that assists churches in preventing and responding to abuse, to conduct an audit on Redeemer Church’s abuse policies and practices.
