3. Evaluate Your Gifts and Character

God equips those He calls. While no one is perfect, a pastoral calling should be accompanied by certain spiritual gifts and a lifestyle that reflects maturity and integrity. Paul’s lists of pastoral qualifications in 1 Timothy 3 and Titus 1 focus more on character than charisma: faithfulness to one’s family, self-control, humility, sound doctrine, and the ability to teach.

Take time to reflect on how your spiritual gifts line up with the demands of pastoral ministry. Do you enjoy teaching Scripture? Are you able to counsel others with patience and empathy? Can you lead with humility rather than ego? Do you have a consistent prayer life and a love for the church?

It’s also important to assess your emotional resilience. Pastoral ministry involves conflict, loss, fatigue, and sometimes isolation. If God is calling you, He will give you the grace to persevere through challenges and the humility to grow through failure.

4. Be Patient and Obedient in the Process

Sometimes the pastoral calling unfolds gradually. God may be preparing you for ministry through experiences that don’t look like pastoring—serving in children’s ministry, leading a Bible study, mentoring youth, or walking with a grieving friend. These moments are not detours but stepping stones.

Rather than rushing to a title or position, be faithful in the opportunities before you. Continue seeking God’s guidance through prayer and Scripture. Explore theological education or ministry training if you sense the call intensifying. Remain open to how God might confirm or redirect your path through circumstances, doors opening or closing, and the wise counsel of others.

Not everyone with a burden for the church is called to be a pastor, but every pastor must carry that burden. If your heart is drawn to shepherd, teach, and love God’s people—and if that desire is confirmed by your gifts, your character, and the affirmation of your community—you may indeed be sensing a pastoral calling.

A Call to Serve, Not to Shine

The pastoral calling is not about personal glory or public influence. It is a sacred summons to serve Christ by serving His people. It involves sacrifice, humility, and daily dependence on the Holy Spirit. If you are discerning this call, take it seriously—but do not be afraid. God does not call the equipped; He equips the called.

Trust Him to lead you one step at a time. And as you listen, follow, and serve where you are, He will make the path clear in His perfect timing.
