Should We Involve Law Enforcement?

In the process of preparing for emergency situations, a good rule of thumb is to stay in communication with local law enforcement in advance of any incident. In some communities, availability might vary, and officials might not be readily available to assist immediately.

Some churches choose to invite local law enforcement to conduct an annual walkthrough of their facilities so officials are familiar with the layout, access points and typical operations. In certain communities, agencies may also participate in coordinated drills or training exercises alongside staff and volunteers.

What Happens If Someone Gets Hurt or If Property Is Damaged?

If an incident results in injury or property damage, the immediate priority is safety. Ensure those involved receive appropriate care and contact local authorities and your insurer as needed.

As it relates to insurance, your coverage will depend on the specific terms, conditions and limits of your individual policy, as well as the circumstances of the event. Because no two policies, or situations, are exactly alike, preparedness planning should include a review of your coverage with your insurer or agent.

As a starting point, many houses of worship review their general liability and professional liability coverage as part of their broader risk planning. Other portions of an insurance program may also be relevant depending on the specific circumstances and scenario planning, which is why it’s best to talk with your insurer.

What If I Have Armed Security Services?

Some churches choose to engage law enforcement or private security services as part of their safety planning. If armed security is part of your approach, it’s important to understand the additional considerations that come with that decision, including how untrained volunteers might introduce additional safety risks that could extend beyond the scope of typical policy coverage.

That makes it increasingly important to consider individuals or services that are highly trained and accompanied by a written security plan with clearly defined policies and procedures, documented training and appropriate background checks. It’s also critical for armed security to prioritize calming and controlled responses, while complying with applicable local and state
laws.

How Will We Know When To Activate Our Response Plan?

Often, when there is a protest or other unrest, it doesn’t come out of nowhere. Those who are organizing will publicize their cause via social media, flyers and word of mouth. Designate a member of your congregation to keep an eye out for signs of an incident or event.

Staying informed allows you to activate your communication and response plan earlier, reducing the need to make split-second decisions under urgency and duress.

Peace of Mind Comes From Preparation

Protests and government actions are unpredictable. However, preparedness is not. Houses of worship that have documented emergency procedures are much better positioned to respond appropriately and maintain a calm, safe environment for everyone involved.
