A study out of Canada suggests that millennials, the last generation to experience a smartphone-free childhood is still keeping one foot firmly planted in the real world — at least when it comes to religion.

A report on churches and technology during the pandemic found that by streaming online services, churches were able to expand their reach, often connecting with people outside their community or reconnecting with former members who had moved away.

On Tuesday, a seemingly evergreen debate among Christian leaders became fresh again when Christian professor and author Jared C. Wilson tweeted a simple yet controversial statement: “Virtual church isn’t church.”

Church planters pinpoint areas of need: fast-growing areas, under-churched areas, and sectors of our world where the numbers of unchurched people are high. Online is that place.

The Church will need to see its online presence and digital ministry as its primary medium for growth, development, discipleship, worship, ministry, community…everything.

The entire world is figuring out how to work more online, and while some of us have been leading online church events for ten plus years, many churches are experiencing this new online reality for the first time.

Church online is direct-to-camera. Church online is interactive. Church online is an intentional effort to disciple a growing online congregation. Streaming video is passive.
