Gospel music legend CeCe Winans (60) was invited to NPR’s Tiny Desk in Washington, D.C., to sing and celebrate as part of Black Music Month. “One of the most accomplished and celebrated women in music history” had a message for all to hear.

“He stays the same,” shared Winans. “Doesn’t matter what we’ve done or where we’ve been.”

CeCe Winans Celebrates 30-Year Solo Career on NPR’s Tiny Desk

Winans, band members, and backup singers were at home in NPR’s Tiny Desk recording studio. As the first Black female solo artist to receive the Artist of the Year award at the 2022 GMA Dove Awards, Winans was welcomed to help commemorate Black Music Month.

“You had me working today!” Winans told NPR Tiny Desk producer Ashley Pointer. The performance marked the 30th anniversary of her debut solo album, “Alone in His Presence,” and included several meaningful and memorable songs.

The “moving journey through the many eras of her monumental career” started off with “Well, Alright” and also featured “Pray” and “Alone in the Presence.”

When these songs were released, Winans was beginning and strengthening her solo career. She and her brother, BeBe, became a duo in the 1980s while singing on “The PTL Club,” hosted by Jim Bakker, and his wife at the time, Tammy Faye.

Winans also recorded an interview on NPR’s “All Things Considered,” which is scheduled to air on June 17. She shared stories behind her music and her “unwavering commitment to ministry and purpose.”

“Celebrating 30 years as a solo artist at NPR’s Tiny Desk and on All Things Considered was truly special,” said Winans. “To perform in such an intimate setting, where the music and message could really connect, was a beautiful experience. And the chance to share my journey on All Things Considered allowed me to reflect on just how faithful God has been every step of the way.”

The half-hour concert included 10 of Winan’s greatest hits—spanning her 30-year solo career. One of the most decorated gospel artists wanted to do more than sing. Winans shared her faith with viewers.

“I just want everybody to know that God loves you with an everlasting love,” said Winans. “And, because he never changes, we can always run to him no matter what we face.”

Pointer reflected, “This performance isn’t just nostalgic. It’s a reminder of Winans’ enduring spiritual and cultural impact. She is one of the most decorated gospel artists of all time.”
