Christian singer Rhett Walker, who appears to share the same management company as Newsboys, spoke out against the “keyboard warriors” criticizing the Contemporary Christian Music (CCM) industry following the allegations against CCM icon Michael Tait.
On Jan. 16, Tait abruptly announced that he was leaving Newsboys, where he was the lead singer. Since then, he has been accused of grooming, sexually assaulting, and drugging young men—including minors—as well as of watching a young woman be raped in 2014.
Tait was also a member of DC Talk, a band who has been on hiatus since 2000.
Walker, who played with Newsboys last month (May 2) in his hometown of Evans, Georgia, told his social media followers that he was unaware of the double life Tait had been living.
“I wasn’t gonna speak up about the Michael Tait situation and allegations cause it’s none of my business,” Walker said. “I didn’t know, so I have nothing to say now other than, if they are true, put him in jail.”
“BUT…I’ve started to see a bunch of keyboard warriors posting all of their thoughts…not about the allegations…but about the CCM industry,” he continued. “That’s where I step in. I’m seeing a lot of posts about how the CCM INDUSTRY is only about making money. The whole thing should be canceled. Just make art. Etc, etc…sooooooooo here we go!”
Walker continued:
You wanna make art and not be in the CCM industry…there’s plenty other genres for you to join…bye. Ohh crap, capitalism…Yea, my calling is my job. So I do have to pay bills and this is what pays my bills. I hope your calling is also your job. If a plumber has the same allegations and they are true, once again…jail. But I don’t cancel the plumbing industry.
Walker said “the sin has consequences,” then made the comment that “it feels weak to hate an industry because of bad people inside it.”
