Spiritual Construction: When God Is Refining Your Character
On the flip side, a season of spiritual construction is when God allows difficulty to develop you, not destroy you. While it may feel painful in the moment, the goal is always transformation.
Romans 5:3–4 tells us:
“We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope.”
God is more interested in our character than our comfort. And just like any solid building needs to undergo demo before it can be rebuilt, we often have to go through spiritual remodeling before we can carry the weight of our next assignment.
Signs You May Be Under Spiritual Construction:
-
Doors are closing—but peace remains
Things may be shifting, but there’s an underlying sense that God is still with you. -
Old habits or attitudes are being confronted
God is revealing areas of pride, fear, or people-pleasing that need to be surrendered. -
You’re being stretched beyond your comfort zone
You’re doing things you didn’t think you could do—or being asked to wait longer than you want. -
God is silent—but not absent
You don’t feel constant reassurance, but you know you’re not alone. -
Growth is happening—even if it’s slow
Your spiritual muscles are being strengthened through prayer, patience, and perseverance.

The difference here is purpose. In spiritual construction, God is not punishing you—He’s preparing you. He’s breaking off what doesn’t belong and building up what does.
