Kat Von D, who was baptized as a Christian in 2023, has shared that she has joined the Orthodox Church. Von D, whose real name is Katherine von Drachenberg, told her Instagram followers that she has been advised to wait a year before doing public interviews about her decision but said she doesn’t want to “hide” where she is on her spiritual journey.

“One of my favorite parts of this European tour, was that I was able to visit different Orthodox parishes throughout every country!” said Von D in a social media post July 2. Von D, who became famous for her work as a tattoo artist on the reality shows “Miami Ink” and “LA Ink,” is a recording artist who just wrapped a European tour promoting her latest album, “My Side of the Mountain.”

“It brings me joy to share some of the beauty of Orthodoxy within these sacred (and historic) places with you, whether you are Orthodox Christian or not,” said Von D in the caption of her post. The post contains a video that begins showing her and her son visiting a church and then shows a series of other Orthodox churches Von D visited.

In addition to being a recording artist, Von D is an entrepreneur who launched her own makeup brand (which she has since sold) and shoe line and has published several books. She and her husband, Rafael Reyes, have one son together.

Von D has been open about her past struggles with substance abuse and just celebrated 18 years of sobriety. In July 2022, she revealed that she was disposing of a number of books she possessed on the occult, and in 2023, the artist shared a video of her baptism.

In it, a minister said, “Katherine von Drachenberg, upon your profession of faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and in obedience to his divine command, I baptize you, my sister, in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Amen.”

Von D later shared she was surprised by the response she got online to her baptism. The non-Christians were more supportive of her decision than she expected them to be, while Christians were her “worst” critics. Many people responded to Von D’s news with “an overwhelmingly beautiful amount of just positivity and…love,” but some Christians criticized her appearance, her husband, and even how she was baptized.

“It was just really sad to see this critical display of judgment from Christians,” said Von D. “And I don’t understand what would inspire that aside from something that’s more egoic because that isn’t Christlike.”

She explained at the time that she would not be sharing extensively about her testimony because “I don’t really feel equipped to be the poster child for Christianity. I think that I’m still learning.”
