Christian leaders and influencers have taken to social media this week with distress about New York City’s new mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani. Among the concerns raised were Mamdani’s Muslim faith and his socialistic economic policies.

Mamdani won the election with 50.4% of the vote, with 41.6% going to Andrew Cuomo, the scandal-plagued former governor of New York State, and 7.1% going to Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa.

Mamdani, an immigrant from Uganda who is of Indian descent, moved to the United States at the age of 7 and became a U.S. citizen in 2018. Prior to being elected mayor, Mamdani served as a member of the New York State Assembly.

Mamdani will replace Eric Adams, whose administration has been marked by a corruption scandal. Mamdani ran on a platform of democratic socialism with strong support from national political figures Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez

Mamdani also garnered endorsements from House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries, New York State Attorney General Letitia James, and New York Gov. Kathy Hochul

In a speech following his election, Mamdani said, “Donald Trump, since I know you’re watching, I have four words for you: Turn the volume up.”

“We will hold bad landlords to account, because the Donald Trumps of our city have grown far too comfortable taking advantage of their tenants,” Mamdani said. “We will put an end to the culture of corruption that has allowed billionaires like Trump to evade taxation and exploit tax breaks.”

“We will stand alongside unions and expand labor protections, because we know, just as Donald Trump does, that when working people have ironclad rights, the bosses that seek to extort them become very small indeed,” he continued.

“New York will remain a city of immigrants, a city built by immigrants, powered by immigrants, and as of tonight, led by an immigrant,” Mamdani added. “So hear me, President Trump, when I say this: To get to any of us, you will have to get through all of us.”

Of Mamdani’s victory, House Speaker Mike Johnson, a devout Southern Baptist, said, “Zohran Mamdani is without a doubt the biggest win for socialism in the history of the country, and it is the biggest loss for the American people.”
