Clemishire filed her defamation suit in June 2025. Later that summer, former Gateway elders Thomas Miller, Jeremy Carrasco, and Gayland Lawshe requested to be removed from Clemishire’s defamation suit. In late October, Robert Morris and his wife, Deborah Morris, also requested to be removed from the lawsuit.

Gateway Church asked a judge to dismiss the suit on the grounds that it is not a court’s place to make judgments in church disputes, reports CBS News. The judge, however, did not agree in a ruling she gave Nov. 11, and the trial is set for the summer of 2026.

Morris himself has sued Gateway Church over a retirement package he says he is owed. Gateway Church members have also filed a class action lawsuit alleging the church misused their tithes.
