Rapper Nicki Minaj is one of the high-profile people drawing attention to the plight of Christians in Nigeria. Minaj is one of the best-selling artists and female rappers of all time, and her lyrics are often sexually explicit.

“Dear God, release your immediate intervention in this matter. Rescue the hostages & may the peace that surpasses all understanding fall upon their families right now,” said Minaj in an X post on Sunday, Nov. 23, responding to a video of Pope Leo calling for hostages in Nigeria and Cameroon to be released. “Lord, we know your power. With faith & thanksgiving in advance, we claim the victory. In the mighty name of JESUS.”

According to Vatican News, 315 students and teachers were kidnapped from St. Mary’s High School in Nigeria Friday, Nov. 21. That same week, six priests and one Baptist pastor were kidnapped in Cameroon.

Open Doors, an organization that supports persecuted Christians, annually ranks the top 50 countries in the world according to the severity with which Christians are persecuted in each. Nigeria was ranked No. 7 in Open Doors’ 2025 World Watch List.

“Jihadist violence continues to escalate in Nigeria,” said Open Doors, “and Christians are particularly at risk from targeted attacks by Islamist militants, including Fulani fighters, Boko Haram and ISWAP (Islamic State West Africa Province).”

While it is not news that Christians are facing difficulties in Nigeria, the issue seems to have gotten more attention lately from different leaders and influencers in the U.S. Remarkably, one of the people to call attention to this issue was political commentator Bill Maher, who is an atheist.

“The fact that this issue has not gotten on people’s radar, it’s pretty amazing,” Maher said on the Sept. 26 episode of his show, “Real Time With Bill Maher.”

He criticized American media for not covering Christian persecution in the African country. “If you don’t know what’s going on in Nigeria, your media sources suck,” said Maher. “You are in a bubble.”

“This is so much more of a genocide attempt than what is going on in Gaza,” Maher said. “They are literally attempting to wipe out the Christian population of an entire country. Where are the kids protesting this?”
