“[Umurzokov] was incredibly kind, funny, and smart. He had big dreams of becoming a neurosurgeon and helping people,” reads the description of a GoFundMe campaign for Umurzokov’s family. “He continues to be my family’s biggest role model in all aspects. He always lent a helping hand to anyone in need without hesitation, and was the most kind-hearted person our family knew.”

“I am deeply saddened by reports of the tragic death of Brown University student Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov on December 13,” said Jonathan Henick, United States ambassador to Uzbekistan. “We extend our sincere condolences to Mr. Umurzokov’s family, friends, and fellow students and mourn the loss of his bright future.”

“God bless the memories of Ella Cook & Mukhammad Aziz Umurzokov who were senselessly murdered on the campus of @BrownUniversity,” said Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida. “May God protect their families.”

Nine others were wounded in the shooting. As of Sunday, one remained in critical condition, seven were in critical but stable condition, and one had been released from the hospital.

Police initially took an individual into custody in connection with the case but later released the individual and indicated that “there is no basis to consider him a person of interest.”
