Apologist Frank Turek recently offered his perspective on whether Christians should attend the wedding of a family member who cheated on his previous spouse.
Turek is an author and podcaster. He is the founder and president of the Christian apologetics ministry CrossExamined, and he is the author or co-author of several books, including “I Don’t Have Enough Faith To Be an Atheist.”
Turek spoke to the issue of divorce and remarriage in the context of a reply to an audience member’s question at a speaking event.

The questioner explained, “My brother committed adultery against his wife, and they got a divorce. And then my brother then wanted, sometime later, to marry the person that he committed adultery with. And he wanted me to come to his wedding, and I told him that I would not come to his wedding.”
“Good for you,” Turek interjected.
The questioner went on to say that he was willing to serve food or contribute to the celebration in some way that did not include attending the ceremony. But he added, “And this has caused a lot of heartache and disruption in our family.”
“I love my brother dearly,” the questioner continued, “but am I being too legalistic or unloving, or am I on the right path?”
Turek replied, “Love doesn’t mean you agree with what sin people want to do.”
“Now, this is a hard teaching in the Scriptures. Don’t get me wrong,” Turek continued. “A person that commits adultery is not supposed to get married again, if they’re a Christian.”
“That’s what the Scriptures say,” Turek said, likely referring to the Apostle Paul’s teachings on divorce in 1 Corinthians 7, as well as the teachings of Jesus found in the Gospel accounts.

“It’s a hard teaching,” Turek reiterated, “but God has his reasons for it.”
