The Freedom From Religion Foundation (FFRF) is celebrating that a Virginia elementary school has removed a Bible verse that was painted on an inside wall of the school.

FFRF announced that Honaker Elementary School students “can now enjoy a school building [free] from inappropriate proselytization.”

The Bible verse that was displayed was Philippians 4:13, which says, “I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”

FFRF is a non-profit organization that seeks “to protect the constitutional principle of separation between state and church, and to educate the public on matters relating to nontheism.”

In a press release, FFRF said, “The Freedom From Religion Foundation is pleased to report that elementary school students in Russell County Public Schools are no longer being exposed to an outsized religious reference.”

FFRF indicated that the Bible verse was removed after it sent a letter of complaint to Kimberly Hooker, the superintendent of Russell County Public Schools.

“We ask that the District remove this bible citation from Honaker Elementary School in order to protect students’ First Amendment rights,” the letter said. “Religion is a divisive force in public schools.”

FFRF said that Hooker had confirmed that the Bible verse had been removed.

“FFRF is always gratified to help school districts return to compliance with the Constitution, which protects the right of conscience of students and parents to be free from indoctrination in public schools,” said FFRF.
