Authorities Warn About ‘Pastor Texting’ Scams Asking for Money

“I got a phone call from my student pastor, and he was telling me that he had been receiving texts from some members of our congregation asking if I was out sending text messages asking for gifts or gift cards,” King said. “They said I was wanting to help provide and take those to the homebound and to those that are battling cancer within our church. And I thought, wow, no, I’m not doing that at all.”

King added, “We’re always hearing of these types of scams and things that are taking place around our world, but to come to the level of a church.”

Vernon Parish Sheriff Sam Craft lamented that there are “no means of illegal activity that these scammers won’t try to go to in order to elicit money from unsuspecting people. It’s really sad.”
