“It just spoke to me,” James said of the Scripture.

A Ball Boy Gave LeBron James a Bible Verse

A starting forward for the Los Angeles Lakers for more than seven years, LeBron James (a.k.a. “King James”) is one of the most decorated athletes in the NBA. In 2025, he surpassed 50,000 career points. He also played for the Miami Heat (2010-14) and Cleveland Cavaliers (2003-10, 2014-18).

Along with endorsements from Nike, Pepsi, and Walmart, James is a spokesperson for DraftKings, a sports betting app.

Sports betting has become an “explosive issue,” according to some Cedarville University professors. Dr. Jared Pincin warned church leaders that gambling “will be a problem in your congregation.” He explained that it can start small, with something most people enjoy, sports. “Gambling disorder is diagnosed like substance addiction,” he said. “And now we’re taking young males, who already have high risk tolerance, and putting them into a high-risk behavior.”

The Los Angeles Lakers lost (116-132) against the Portland Trail Blazers on Jan. 17. Following the game, James posted a picture on social media of a Scripture printed on a red card.

“So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God,” it said, quoting Isaiah 41:10a.

Law Murray, a reporter for The Athletic, has been covering professional basketball for years. He admits, “I’m used to seeing Bron post a lot of things, but not Bible verses.”

Murray mentioned the post in an interview, asking James, “What did that speak to you in that moment?”

James explained that a ball boy in Portland gave the verse to him after the Lakers’ game against the Trail Blazers.

The ball boy told James, “Jesus loves you.” James agreed, “Obviously, he does.”

“I thought that was a great quote,” explained James. “When I read it, it just spoke to me.”

James mentioned two reasons he posted the Scripture. “One, ’cause the guy was grateful enough and gracious enough to give it to me,” he said. “And, just reading it—it’s good to know that the people that’s laid down and the Word being so great.”

“That was just a pretty cool moment for me,” James said.

More than a million people have seen the interview and many have commented. While some were skeptical, others were quick to point out the potential in James’ life and that of the many viewers.

“The seed one ball boy can plant was reaped by millions,” said Ballers in God.

“Spending eternity with Lebron [sic] in heaven with our Creator could not make me more happy,” said a user named Zachary.
