Katy Nichole Discusses ‘Honest Conversations’ and the Most Detrimental Phrase Christians Say About Mental Health

“So I don’t understand why, in the church, it such a weird conversation to be had. I’ve had so many church leaders tell me ‘Well if you just prayed a little more [then] you’d be fine. You just need Jesus. You don’t need a doctor—it’ll go away,’” Nichole said.

“That needs to stop,” Nichole said, “and that is why I speak about this because someone is going to die because they’re going to go to someone and they’re going to be vulnerable—they are going to share their heart—and you’re going to turn them away by [saying] ‘Well, you just need Jesus.’”

“They probably already had Jesus in the first place and then suddenly they don’t believe Jesus loves them in more because Jesus didn’t heal them,” Nichole explained. “That is one the most detrimental things that you could possibly do to a person. I will say this because I don’t want another person to die…that’s why I wrote these songs.”
