The seminary president concluded, “Let’s get this thing done.”

SBC Presidential Nominees Endorse Mohler’s Proposal

Willy Rice and Josh Powell, both of whom will be nominated to become the next SBC president, endorsed Mohler’s proposed amendment on social media.

“I support an amendment to our constitution,” Rice said. “I endorse and will support the renewed effort to amend the constitution.”

“Southern Baptists have been clear: ‘the office of pastor/elder/overseer is limited to men as qualified by Scripture,’” Powell posted. “I have supported & continue to support any effort to make our Constitution equally clear. Our aim should be to honor our Baptist identity & cooperative mission.”

SBC Pastor Dwight McKissic: White Men Deciding Whether a Woman Can Speak at Your Church on a Sunday Morning Is Abusive

Others in the SBC pushed back on Mohler’s proposal, including Dwight McKissic, senior pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Arlington, Texas.

McKissic believes that if Mohler’s proposal passes, the “biggest beneficiary of such a move will be the largest Baptist Convention in Texas, and the GC2 movement headquartered in Texas.”

“The SBC NAAF and the SBC Chinese Baptist Fellowship are on record opposing an amendment similar to Mohler’s,” McKissic posted. “Many Hispanic Churches and many Anglo SBC churches wouldn’t agree with Mohler’s proposal.”

The longtime SBC pastor told his social media followers he will be at peace regardless of the proposal’s outcome.

“No matter the outcome of Mohler’s vote, I’m at peace. As in the Paul/Barnabas dispute over John Mark, the kingdom will probably expand itself through the BGCT/GC2, if Mohler wins,” he said.

“Therefore, I say, in the words of the old Negro spiritual…’Ride on King Jesus, ride on, no man, cannot hinder thee, no man cannot hinder thee,” McKissic continued. “I pity the Black Church who will allow the SBC to have the first or final determination regarding what they believe or practice regarding women in ministry.”

McKissic argued that it is abusive for white men to determine whether a woman can speak at a church.

“Allowing a room full of White men to decide if a woman can speak at your church on Sunday morning is abusive to women in your church, who actually fund your church,” he said. “This proposed action by the SBC has intended or unintended racial implications either the SBC has not considered, or simply don’t care.”
