Martin’s remarks were a subtle jab at a controversial 2019 SBC resolution, which states that while critical race theory (CRT) and intersectionality “alone are insufficient to diagnose and redress the root causes of the social ills that they identify,” they are nevertheless useful analytical tools that “can aid in evaluating a variety of human experiences.”
CRT has been a matter of ongoing debate among members of the SBC, with some of its opponents accusing those who support its use of being influenced by Marxism.

While Martin’s smile during his remarks about building a church on Mars seemed to indicate that his comments about Patterson and Pressler were made in jest, Martin nevertheless appeared serious about the possibility of future interstellar church planting.
“But you know, truly, someday, we’re gonna need to build churches on the moon. Someday, we’re gonna need to build churches on Mars. Someday, we may need to build churches other places,” Martin said.
