‘Positive’ Christian Nationalism Compared to ‘Positive’ Fascism
In response to Perry’s tweet, Walker said, “Not sure I understand this. Seems to me when I read your book you seemed to recognize, or at least imply, gradations in CN’s manifestations. Thoughts?”
“I’ve always affirmed Christians living/voting their values WITHIN THE CONTEXT of liberal democracy that protects religious freedom for all. But the expressions of CN I see these folks promoting are veering into something that necessarily defies liberal democracy & Christian love,” Perry replied.

Walker then expressed his concern regarding the extent to which ‘the proclamation of a Christian truth claim that desires cultural/legal recognition is upheld as ‘illiberal’ by critics.” Perry acknowledged that moral values will always be criticized by their opponents as being restrictive on certain freedoms, whether those beliefs are a conservative sexual ethic or a progressive vision for racial equity.
Perry further explained that even while that is the case, Christians shouldn’t put much effort into redeeming the term “Christian nationalism,” saying, “We’re already seeing folks back away from affirming CN indicators in surveys. Saying ‘positive Christian nationalism’ is gonna be like saying ‘positive fascism.’”
