Ensuring the safety of rescued girls is a priority, says Veldkamp, noting that CSI often assists with relocation, especially in high-profile cases. “Misguided people think they need to defend their religion by hurting these people,” he says, referencing retributory violence and so-called “honor killings.”
On its website, CSI shares an interview with Sadaf, who describes being threatened with death unless she converted to Islam. “I was married against my will,” she says, adding that she was forced to undergo five abortions and endure severe pain without any medical care.
“On the day of my liberation, I felt like a bird that had been trapped in a cage for a long time and now can hardly believe that it is allowed to fly free again,” Sadaf adds. “I am so happy to be reunited with my parents.”
