Dellareese Williams, who lives near the abandoned church building, says it had been “years” since someone entered that structure. “But then we seen a ladder going into the building,” she says about the appearance of firefighters, who entered through the roof. “Then to find out that it was someone deceased in there that had been away from their family and missing for God knows how long, that’s really the heartbreaking part.” She adds, “Someone’s family now can possibly get closure. Also they can begin to grieve.”
As more churches close across America, denominations and communities are faced with tough decisions about what to do with structures and land. As ChurchLeaders has shared, some are using the physical spaces in creative, positive ways. Meanwhile, empty buildings and no plan for how to use them can spell trouble.

“It’s sad to see these type of tragedies are occurring in these [vacant] buildings,” says Williams. “We need to take a deeper look at what these buildings can be used for that can benefit our community.”
