‘I Found My Father’ — Greg Laurie Reveals His Dad’s Surprising Story of Faith and Healing

So, Laurie told his story. While Barbara listened intently and interjected questions, Oscar sat at the end of the table—quiet, stoic, with hands folded. This successful and learned man was, in fact, listening to the conversation.

Before they turned in for the night, Oscar asked Laurie, “Will you walk with me in the morning?” Since Oscar’s heart attack a couple of weeks prior, morning walks had become part of his normal routine.

While on the walk, Oscar shared that he listened closely to Laurie’s story last night, adding, “I want to accept Jesus Christ into my life—right now.”

Taken aback, Laurie reiterated the gospel message. Oscar remained adamant. That morning, he accepted Christ.

“Pray for my heart. Pray that God heals my heart,” Oscar went on to plead of Laurie. The two continued to pray. While Laurie believed in God’s power to heal, he also knew that sometimes God’s answer is no. He explained this to Oscar, but Oscar believed his heart to be healed.

They ended up walking by Oscar’s cardiologist’s office, and the father-son duo entered for an impromptu appointment. After testing, the doctor confirmed that Oscar no longer had his heart condition. God had chosen to heal him.

“I had 15 more years with my dad,” Laurie concludes. “He grew spiritually, he worked with The Gideons, distributing Bibles. He became an elder in his church. It was just one of the most amazing things I ever have seen.”

‘Jesus Revolution’ Continues To Impact People and Churches

Laurie recently sat down with Ed Stetzer on The Stetzer ChurchLeaders Podcast and discussed how churches can use the film.

“I didn’t know it, but I had literally walked into the middle of a spiritual awakening. And it wasn’t until later I realized, ‘Oh wow, that was an actual revival,’” Laurie reflected on the events depicted in the film. “In fact, it was the last great spiritual awakening in America, the Jesus Movement…it was not until some time later that I realized how significant that particular time was.”

Individuals and churches can use the film as a conversation starter. Believers can ask fellow movie watchers if they understood what was happening, Laurie explained.

When talking about his mom, Charlene, Laurie said, “There’s hope for anyone, no matter what you’ve done, no matter what mistakes you’ve made, no matter what sins you’ve committed.”
