Metropolitan AME was represented by the Criminal Justice Project at the Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights Under Law. Director Arthur Ago said, “The ultimate goal of this lawsuit was not monetary windfall but to stop the Proud Boys from being able to act with impunity, without fear of consequences for their actions. And that’s exactly what we accomplished.”

The leader of the Proud Boys, Henry “Enrique” Tarrio, previously was sentenced to five months in jail for burning a BLM banner at another D.C. church, Asbury United Methodist. He and several other group members were convicted of seditious conspiracy stemming from the January 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. They face up to 20 years in prison.
