‘May We All Turn to God’—Pastor Greg Laurie Reflects on the Days After 9/11
“Tragedy wakes us up [to] the brevity of our life on this earth and our need for God,” said Laurie. “May we all remember the 2,977 people who were tragically murdered on 9/11. May God comfort their families today and may we all turn to God.”
Laurie, like so many others, remembers vividly the events after the attacks. “I went to the site of what used to be the World Trade Center 2 days after the terrorist attack,” recalled Laurie. “The smoke was still coming from the ruins and there was shrapnel in the nearby buildings. It was really hard to understand.”
“Everyone in the city of New York was traumatized,” he said. Many Christians flocked to New York to offer help—cleaning up, offering meals, relieving first responders, and just being present. Laurie continued, “We prayed for people and offered God’s comfort the best we could,” specifically for the “courageous firefighters who had been working tirelessly to save lives.”
Laurie and others provided a meal at the Brooklyn Tabernacle. Laurie remembered, “After the meal, we had a worship service and I spoke and gave an invitation for people to accept Christ. Among those that came forward to put their faith in Jesus was a number of these men.”
