Recent attacks on Johnson’s faith include the Daily Beast describing him as a “Christo-fascist” who imposes his religion on people like “mullahs in Iran.” In response, the House Speaker—a Southern Baptist—called that “disgusting” and “absurd.”

Media outlets have also highlighted Johnson’s previous comments about evolution, abortion’s role in school shootings, and criminalizing gay sex. Johnson, a lawyer, reportedly offered legal advice to Exodus International, a now-defunct group that supported anti-gay conversion therapy.
