SBC sexual abuse survivor and advocate Tiffany Thigpen described what the four pastors did in affirming Hunt for ministry as a “disservice” to the former SBC president.
“These four men have done him a disservice and have harmed their own witness,” Thigpen told ChurchLeaders in an interview last December. She said they didn’t heed the Apostle Paul’s warning in Galatians “of not becoming complicit yourself in the process of helping him—a travesty for the victim, her family, the church, Johnny’s family.”

“In regards to doing the right things, it seems that SBC pastors as a whole cannot wrap their minds around the concept of accountability for its teachers and leaders,” Thigpen told ChurchLeaders regarding Hunt’s continued presence in SBC pulpits. “When we cannot follow Christ’s teachings on something defined as being ‘above reproach,’ and hold to his commands on this issue, we won’t disarm abusers.”
Although abuse is brought into the light, Thigpen added, “it will continue to be something that still takes place in the dark.”
