X Officially Allows Distribution of ‘Adult Content’ as ‘Artistic Expression’

In May 2024, the social media platform updated its policies surrounding “adult content—any consensually produced and distributed material depicting adult nudity or sexual behavior that is pornographic or intended to cause sexual arousal.” The definition also includes AI-generated content.

“We believe that users should be able to create, distribute, and consume material related to sexual themes as long as it is consensually produced and distributed. Sexual expression, visual or written, can be a legitimate form of artistic expression,” X’s policies state.

The new policies require users to mark their own “adult content” appropriately. Those under the age of 18 or who haven’t entered a birthdate on their profile cannot access labeled content.

X continues to ban “content promoting exploitation, nonconsent, objectification, sexualization or harm to minors, and obscene behaviors.”
