Iorg served as president of Gateway Seminary for two decades and told the EC that “serving as the EC president is a surprising development in my life.” He described his daughter encouraging him to step into the role. “Southern Baptists are a force for good,” Iorg said, explaining that his vision for the EC is to help “get the gospel to more people.”
“It is not our job to maximize the administrative processes or to magnify the administrative process,” said Iorg. “It is our job to do our work quietly and efficiently so that we can get on with the real work of winning more and more people to faith in Jesus.”
Former President Donald Trump appeared by video Monday, June 10, at an offsite meeting held by the newly formed The Danbury Institute. During his comments, Trump praised attendees for their “tremendous devotion to God and to country” and for their “tremendous support.”
“I hope I’ve earned it,” he said, “because we’ve done things that nobody thought were possible to have gotten done.”
Trump told attendees not to vote for Democrats because Democrats are “against religion, they’re against your religion in particular,” and Southern Baptists “have to defend religious liberty, free speech, innocent life, and the heritage and tradition that built America into the greatest nation in the history of the world.”
Bart Barber Uses Final Presidential Address To Exhort Southern Baptists To Pursue Unity
During his last address as the president of the Southern Baptist Convention on the morning of Tuesday, June 11, Bart Barber took the majority of his time to “preach.” Barber exhorted attendees on the first day of the SBC annual meeting to pursue unity and to bear with one another’s weaknesses.
“It’s been a great joy and honor to serve you over the past two years,” Barber said at the beginning of his speech.
“One important ingredient of our health,” he observed, “is our ability to cooperate with one another.” Barber went on to expound on Romans 15, calling attendees to be patient with one another, explaining why believers often fail to do so, and expressing his love and gratitude for Southern Baptists.
