“I think we have run to the safety of programs in exchange for God’s divine purpose,” he added. Stier explained that the phrase “picking up your cross and dying to yourself” looks like “risking our social equity by putting Jesus out there with our lips and our lives.”

“That risk can mean we could be marginalized or mocked,” he said. “In some cultures, you could be mangled and murdered…you don’t have to pay that in a meeting when you’re surrounded by other Christians.”
