Once the two got connected, Jelly Roll told Neal that he and Lake “spent hours just talking about God and life and family” before they even got to discussing “Hard Fought Hallelujah.” Jelly Roll asked Lake, “Can I do the song?” And Lake responded by telling Jelly Roll, “I was going to ask you to be on the song.”
Jelly Roll explained that he is so focused on the song right now that he doesn’t want any of his own songs to get in the way.
“If there’s any way it’s going to get in the way of what ‘Hard Fought Hallelujah’ and what God’s doing with that song right now, and what I think country radio could do with that song,” Jelly Roll added, “I’m going to vote towards ‘Hard Fought Hallelujah.’”
“Trust me,” he said, “that’s not necessarily the economically smart decision, but it’s [the] right decision.”
