Most presidents throughout the nation’s history have self-identified as Christians.
Trump later invited television personality Dr. Phil McGraw to deliver his own remarks, and McGraw referred to Trump as “a man of deep faith.”
“This is a man who wants this country to have a heart and have religion,” McGraw said. “And God bless America for giving us President Donald Trump.”
Also during the event, Trump announced the establishment of a religious liberty commission, which will focus on parental rights in education and protections for houses of worship, free speech, and “institutional autonomy.”
Other Leaders Commemorate National Day of Prayer Online
Online, several leaders posted about the National Day of Prayer, expressing a mix of reverence and patriotism—and the occasional endorsement of President Trump’s leadership.
A post from the official House Republicans X profile read, “Today, we recognize the National Day of Prayer. Millions of Americans will lift their voices to the Lord. May God bless the United States of America.”
Congressional Rep. Nancy Mace wrote, “On this National Day of Prayer, we pause to lift up our nation, our leaders, and our families. May faith guide us and unite us.”
Evangelist Franklin Graham said, “I am grateful there’s a day set aside to recognize and remind us of the vital importance of prayer for our nation and our leaders, including our President, @realDonaldTrump (@POTUS).”
“We need to thank God for the many abundant blessings that have come from His hand, and humbly ask for His forgiveness, mercy, help, guidance, and protection—not just today, but every day,” Graham added. “Let us declare: In God we trust!”
Pastor Greg Laurie wrote, “Let’s all pause and take a moment to pray—for our nation, for our leaders, and for the future of America. Pray that God would send a spiritual awakening across this land.”
