“I’m happy to report that rumours of my demise (or apostasy or divorce) have been greatly exaggerated!” said Webb.
Webb went on to explain some reasons why he might be on Chapell’s “enemies list,” reasons that involved disagreement over the role of women in church leadership. Friday afternoon, Webb posted, “Since everyone is sharing the little notes they have on their desk…,” and shared a screenshot of Philippians 4:6.
Wes White, whose name is also on Chapell’s list, responded to the controversy as well. White is listed as the adult ministry pastor at Grace Church in Peoria, Illinois, which he identified as Chapell’s “former church.” In a post titled, “How I Ended up on Stated Clerk Bryan Chapell’s List,” White described his own past behavior contending for what he believed was true.
“I came to see that my approach had often been wrong. I had maligned good men—Chapell, [Roy] Taylor, [Tim] Keller—not because of theological disagreement, but because of how I chose to wage my battles,” said White. “So, I apologized, publicly and privately, where I could.”
“Being on that list doesn’t bother me. At one time, I was exactly the kind of person it warns about,” White said. “But I’m grateful those days are behind me. I still care deeply about truth, but controversy no longer tops the list.”
White praised Chapell, saying, “I’ve seen the fruit of his ministry firsthand. I’m thankful for his work here and in the denomination. I wish him all the best—and I genuinely hope his vision becomes more and more the vision of the PCA.”
