At Copeland’s ministry, Oliveira didn’t hear or encounter the televangelist himself. But he did share clips of another man preaching about blessings, prosperity, and giving to the church.

“My interpretation of the sermon,” Oliveira said, is that “God is like a miracle machine, where I could will miracles into my life, and if I give him my faith and money, he will give me whatever I desire.” Oliveira concluded that prosperity churches are “plugging harder than most YouTubers.”

In Florida, Oliveira attended a Word of Faith service, telling a greeter he was seeking healing for neck pain.

“This theology has wreaked havoc on our lives and in our relationships in our families,” some disillusioned former church members told him afterward. “The God of the Bible and Christians who adhere to God’s Word as their standard would never treat people this way.”
