“ I’m wanting to obey the rules as much as I can, obviously,” said Buck, and Pressley replied, “And I’m wanting to help you as much as I can. I promise.”
“Tell us why you want the EC to look into it,” Pressley added, “but be real nice about it.”
After some laughter from the crowd, Buck joked, “Well, if anybody knows me, they, if I’m anything, it’s nice.”
“ First of all, this involves two things on my motion,” said Buck. “One is a video that is in possession…that has evidence on it that would exonerate claims that have been made against the former EC chairman. That video has been requested multiple times to be released.”
Referring to Emmanuel Baptist Church in Blackshear, Georgia, where Stone is pastor, Buck said, “ The church of this pastor, who is the former EC chairman, has requested that video. He’s been told that it would be released, and it is yet to be released.”
Buck further alleged that the Baptist Press, the official news publication of the SBC, had made false claims about Stone that it had yet to retract.
“ We need to have these things investigated to know what the truth is, whether this former chairman can be exonerated—or if he’s done wrong, that that can be proven as well,” Buck said. Buck argued that this is “not a minor issue,” as he believes it “made a difference” in Stone losing the SBC presidential election to Alabama Pastor Ed Litton.
“ There is documented evidence that the leadership of Baptist Press and the Executive Committee have not given the correction that could be given for this,” Buck said. “This is the same flawed and failed mindset that led us to the great injustice against a sexual abuse survivor, and it’s…resulted in financial loss to this convention.”
Buck sought to further his argument but was cut off.
When the microphones were opened for discussion, Missouri Pastor Rich Sterns said, “ This really does sound like an issue of personal grievance between a person who is not an officer of the convention right now and another person that may be an entity.”
“But it does not sound like the business of the Executive Committee to administer or the work of the Southern Baptist Convention,” he added. “ I don’t believe that this is a procedure that we need to spend our resources, our time, our [Cooperative Program] giving to have the Executive Committee doing.”
