One year after the bullet of a would-be assassin bloodied his ear at a campaign rally, President Donald Trump thanked God for sparing his life. The president—who escaped the shooting in Butler, Pennsylvania, with minor injuries—also thanked the “heroes” from July 13, 2024, including slain firefighter Corey Comperatore.

In remarks over the weekend, Trump reflected on the assassination attempt by a 20-year-old gunman. “An assassin’s bullet came within a quarter inch of ending my life and silencing our movement to restore American greatness,” he said in a White House post. “Yet, by the hand of providence and the grace of Almighty God, my life was spared.”

The president continued, “We reaffirm that the American spirit has and will always triumph over forces of evil and destruction.” Adding that the country is experiencing “a new Golden Age,” Trump said, “It remains my firm conviction that God alone saved me that day for a righteous purpose: to restore our beloved Republic to greatness and to rescue our Nation from those who seek its ruin.”

Donald Trump: Presidency Is a ‘Dangerous Profession’

President Donald Trump credited first responders and others who “carry scars” from the assassination attempt, which he called “one of our Nation’s darkest hours.” He also thanked “patriots” at the Butler rally who displayed kindness and compassion.

Trump singled out Comperatore, a firefighter and veteran who was shot and killed while trying to shield his wife and daughter. “He died a hero,” wrote the president, “and we are eternally grateful for his inspiring love, valor, and faithfulness.”

Trump also referenced the “Fight, fight, fight” cry that went up in Butler as Secret Service agents whisked him off the stage. Two months later, then-candidate Trump had another security scare while golfing. The Secret Service director resigned last July, and several agents were recently suspended.

Speaking to reporters on the anniversary of the near-miss, Trump said he prefers not to dwell it. “I don’t like to think about it much,” he said of the shooting. “I have a job to do, so I don’t like to think about it much. It’s a little bit of a dangerous profession being president… Better off not thinking about it.”
