The long-delayed sequel to “The Passion of the Christ” is set to be released in two parts in 2027, Lionsgate announced on social media this week.
In May, Lionsgate announced that it is officially partnering with Mel Gibson for “The Resurrection of the Christ,” which will be released 23 years after its predecessor. Part 1 of the film will premiere on Good Friday, March 26, 2027, and Part 2 will be released on Ascension Day, May 6, 2027.
At the time of its release in 2004, “The Passion of the Christ” was controversial for its graphic depictions of the violence endured by Jesus, as well as for accusations against Gibson of antisemitism.

Gibson famously began production of the film without outside funding because he was unable to garner support for the project.
The film went on to be a box office smash, earning more than $600 million worldwide.
Gibson, who directed the film, and Jim Caviezel, who portrayed Jesus Christ in the film, have long promised that a sequel was in the works.
In 2023, Caviezel said that “The Resurrection of the Christ” would “be the biggest film in history. It might be two films—could be three, but I think it’s two.”
Caviezel will return to reprise his role as Jesus.

In May, Gibson likewise teased that “The Resurrection of the Christ” would be released in two parts, saying, “It’s a pretty big thing. It’s not one film, it’s two films, because it’s massive.”
