Reba McEntire, one of the most notable country music artists, was married to Narvel Blackstock from 1989 to 2015. During that time, McEntire developed a special bond with stepson Brandon Blackstock that continued well after her marriage to Narvel ended.
Brandon Blackstock died at the age of 48 after a three-year battle with cancer. McEntire posted a tribute to her stepson (her oldest son) amid her grief.
“Last week, my stepson/oldest son Brandon Blackstock went home to be with God,” McEntire shared. “His struggle is over and he is in eternal peace in God’s presence.”
For 26 years, McEntire was married to Narvel, Blackstock’s father, and, clearly, Blackstock and McEntire shared a special bond.
“There is no one else like him, and I’m thankful for the time we had together. His legacy and laughter will be carried on through his family,” said McEntire. “Rest in peace cowboy. Happy trails to you til we meet again.”

“Words cannot begin to capture the tremendous loss our family has endured,” Blackstock’s brother, Shelby, posted on Instagram. “Yesterday, we lost a brother, a father, a grandfather, and a son. Brandon Blackstock was an irreplaceable part of our family—funny, bright, and full of life—and he will be deeply missed.”
Shelby spoke of how Blackstock “taught me so much” and left “behind countless cherished memories.”
Blackstock’s brother continued with a smile, “And although it may annoy you, you’ll have to watch me do it all just a little better, a little smoother, and—let’s be honest—looking far more handsome than you ever could in the process.”
Blackstock was married to “American Idol” winner Kelly Clarkson, a music artist and host of “The Kelly Clarkson Show.” Amy Grant and Bethel Music are among the various artists Clarkson has invited to perform on her show.
Blackstock and Clarkson share two children, River (11) and Remington (9).
Days before Blackstock’s passing, Clarkson announced she needed to postpone her residency in Las Vegas.
“While I normally keep my personal life private, this past year, my children’s father has been ill and at this moment, I need to be fully present for them,” Clarkson posted on Instagram.
