“Highest 2 Lowest” was released in theaters on Aug. 15 and will stream on Apple TV+ on Sept. 5. Washington teamed up again with Spike Lee to release this film surrounding “a titan music mogul” who is “targeted with a ransom plot.”

Denzel Washington: ‘I Really Don’t Care’ About Prestige, Opinions, or Awards

After winning nearly 90 awards, Washington admits he’s “lost” many awards along the way.

“Man gives the award, God gives the reward. That’s what my mother told me about the eighth or ninth time I lost an Academy Award,” Washington said after receiving his minister’s license. “She says, ‘Boy, man gives the award, God gives the reward.’”

“I don’t do it for Oscars,” said Washington. “I really don’t care about that kind of stuff. I’ve been at this a long time. There’s times when I won and shouldn’t have won, and shouldn’t have won and won. Man gives the award. God gives the reward.”

Washington continued, “On my last day, it ain’t gon’ do me a bit of good.”

As a multi-sport athlete, Washington played football in high school and basketball in college at Fordham College at Rose Hill in New York. He’s been outspoken about how professional sports have moved away from the game and towards financial gain.

Washington shared his opinion about commentators who haven’t actually played the game.

“Everybody’s got an opinion,” said Washington. “In fact, we live in a world of opinionaires. That’s what I call ‘em, opinionaires. All the shows are a bunch of guys, a couple of them that have played but most of ‘em who haven’t, who have an opinion about what something should be when they haven’t done it.”

He further expressed the impact that experience has on commentating—especially in sports. “Those who can, do. Those who can’t talk about those who can,” he said. “Those who have, know what they’re talking about. Those who haven’t, don’t. Period.”
