‘I Follow God, I Don’t Follow Man’—Denzel Washington Unconcerned About Cancel Culture
Public opinion matters to marketing experts, influencers, and many in the entertainment industry,. But not to movie icon Denzel Washington.
When asked by Complex News if he was afraid of being “canceled,” Washington responded with his own question of what that means. The interviewer explained that being canceled means “you lose public support.”
“Who cares? What made public support so important to begin with?” Washington asked. “You can’t lead and follow at the same time, and you can’t follow and lead at the same time.”
Washington has been clear—he follows his faith and what God says. “I follow the heavenly Spirit. I follow God. I don’t follow man,” he said. “I have hope in man, but look around; it ain’t working out so well.”
“You can’t be canceled if you haven’t signed up,” said Washington. “Don’t sign up.”
Just last year, the actor shared that not only was he baptized but he also received his minister’s license. “Anything and everything I can do, I will do for this church, for the Almighty,” Washington said. “I just want to be in that number when the saints go marching in. Amen.”
Washington has been in the entertainment industry for decades, and his family has been “passing it on” and joined in various roles. His son, Malcolm, is a filmmaker. Washington’s son John David and daughter Olivia are both actors, and his other daughter Katia is a producer.
In a trailer for Washington’s newest movie, “Highest 2 Lowest,” he plays a successful music producer with the “best ears in the business.” After acting in more than 60 films, Washington continues to love the film industry.
