As another analogy, Comfort said Jude 1:23 likens Christians to firefighters who can save people from a lake of fire. “There’s no better news this world could ever hope to hear, other than Jesus Christ has abolished death and brought life…through the gospel,” he explained. “So that’s what…helps me ignore my fears.”

When Comfort witnesses on a campus or beach, he brings along his sunglasses-wearing dog to break down barriers. He also uses trivia questions to initiate conversations. The evangelist asks people if they fear death, which engages their conscience rather than their intellect.

“COVID did a huge favor for the church,” Comfort said, making “a generation face their fear of death.” He said God has “placed eternity” into our hearts, so “there’s a longing in them for life.”

Sharing Jesus publicly doesn’t require skill, according to Comfort: “You just need love.” For anyone who’s nervous about open-air preaching, he pointed out that many Americans are thrill-seekers. “If you’re going to risk your life [doing] something as dumb as bungee-jumping or skydiving,” he said, “why don’t you risk your life by going to the local college and preaching the gospel?”

Evangelism is also a “huge moral obligation,” said Comfort, likening Christians to “doctors with a cure to cancer.” At age 75, the minister knows that his time on earth is limited. “I want to pass the baton on to the next generation and say, ‘You can do this,’” said Comfort. “The key is to obey the Great Commission and go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.”
