Greg Laurie, pastor of Harvest Christian Fellowship in Riverside, California, is at home recovering after a successful hip replacement surgery on Tuesday, Aug. 19. Laurie had asked for prayers prior to his surgery, and in his latest update, he said the surgery was “very successful.”

“I want to thank you all for your prayers for my hip replacement surgery—it was very successful!” said Laurie on Wednesday, Aug. 20. “The doctors said they couldn’t believe I had even been walking on that hip. For all practical purposes, I wasn’t… but I did manage to make it to the baptism and preach a couple of sermons last Sunday.”

On Aug. 16, Laurie led the third annual Jesus Revolution Baptism at Pirate’s Cove in Newport Beach, California. In a post on the Harvest website, Laurie announced that 2,100 people were baptized at the event, bringing the total baptisms done “through our church and outreach baptism events” to 10,000. The recent event follows the ministry’s 35th Harvest Crusade, held on July 19 at Angel Stadium in Anaheim, California.

In an Aug. 18 Facebook post, Laurie said that despite “a few memorable visits to the ER,” he had never been to the hospital for surgery in his 72 years of life. However, he said, “This surgery is long overdue. I’ve been in pain for quite a while and kept putting it off.” The pastor shared in a video clip that the pain was impacting his right leg and joked about how he had come to enjoy using a cane.

Laurie posted a video to his social media on Tuesday morning, requesting prayer for that day’s surgery and letting his followers know that his wife, Cathe, and his son, Jonathan, would give people updates about how the surgery had gone. “I guess I’ve gone from being a hippie to needing a hip replacement,” Laurie said. “I’ve gone from acid rock to acid reflux.”

An update appeared on Laurie’s social media later in the day. “Hi everyone, Cathe and Jonathan here- just wanna let you know the surgery was fast went really well!” said the post. “Thank you for your prayers it made a huge difference!! All the nurses and drs attending him were simply fantastic!”

In his Wednesday update about the surgery, Laurie said, “From the moment I walked into the hospital, God surrounded me with believers—the receptionist, the nurses, even my doctor, who asked me to pray for him before his surgeries that day. My anesthesiologist was also a Christian. What a blessing!”
