Trading the Microphone for a Pen: John Mark McMillan Announces Final Music Tour
John Mark McMillan’s fans are grateful for the “poetic musical journey” McMillan has led for a couple of decades. Whether recorded solo or with other Christian bands, his music has reached a wide range of generations. After navigating years in the volatile music industry, McMillan is ready to focus on “a new phase.”
McMillan began his post with the simple and foreboding statement, “I have some sad news.” He announced, “This will be my last tour.”
His Cosmic Supreme Tour will be his last, with 16 locations this fall. Stops include multiple locations in Florida, Illinois, Missouri, Pennsylvania, and South Carolina—as well as in other states in the Eastern half of the U.S.
Despite this tour being his last, McMillan is far from being done pouring out his creativity.
“It’s time for me to enter a new phase in my life where music is no longer my full-time endeavor,” McMillan said. “I want to write books, pour into a new generation of creatives, and focus on local projects.”
The music industry has been challenging for countless artists, particularly with the shift to streaming services and the need to navigate the upheaval brought on by COVID-19.
“Plus, I know what you’re thinking: yes, the stress related to the economy and the current state of the music industry is a significant factor,” McMillan admitted. “Money has never been my primary motivation, but the financial burden of living in a world where music has little or no monetary value has made it hard to find a sustainable model.”
McMillan is “not looking for sympathy,” as he recognizes all lives are full of stress these days. After a long, successful career, he has the “chance to step away from some of the stress.” McMillan continued, “I believe it’s time to do that. At least for a while.”
“Music will always be a part of my life,” he admitted. “I’ll participate in a few special events next year and may join friends on shows. But after this Fall tour, my touring days are finished, at least for the foreseeable future.”
