If Christians across political traditions can agree on the inherent worth of every person made in God’s image and the importance of respecting governing authorities, then bipartisan solutions are not only possible—they are faithful attempts to embody shared values with a unified voice. Then it is not so much about letting everyone in or keeping everyone out but about establishing policies that respect due process with predictable legal pathways that ensure humane treatment and the protection of families and those persecuted.
Bipartisan policies like the Dream Act (introduced in the Senate) and the Dignity Act (introduced in the House) do just that. While no policy is perfect, both combine order and compassion by establishing stability for our co-workers, neighbors, students and church members, whose long-term presence is proof of their faithfulness to serving and contributing to our communities.
Scripture encourages unity
May our shared faith unify us despite our differences and encourage us to cross ideological lines in pursuit of just and compassionate reform.
