Every October, churches across the country celebrate Pastor Appreciation Month. In some ways, I don’t love the idea of limiting our gratitude to just one month. I wish we talked about how to encourage and honor our pastors all year long.

Still, like many other points of recognition, this season serves as a valuable reminder: our pastors are a gift. Their ministry, leadership, and care often go unseen—and unthanked. Taking intentional time to express appreciation matters more than we realize.

So how can you show your pastor that you care? The following ten ideas come from years of listening to pastors share what touches their hearts most. Some gestures cost nothing. Others are simple but deeply meaningful. All will encourage your pastor more than you might imagine.

2. A handwritten letter of support.

Pastors face criticism regularly—it’s simply part of the job. A letter reminding them that you’re in their corner can help balance out the weight of discouragement. Be specific about what you appreciate and how their leadership impacts your faith.

3. An anonymous letter with cash.

You don’t need to overthink it—just make it clear the gift is meant personally for your pastor. Many pastors quietly go without extras like books, meals out, or small luxuries. A no-strings-attached envelope of generosity can mean more than you’ll ever know.

4. A gift card.

Find out what your pastor really enjoys. Is there a favorite coffee shop, restaurant, or bookstore? A gift card shows thoughtfulness and gives them the chance to rest, enjoy a meal, or pick up a resource they’ve been eyeing.
