After signing with the New York Jets in March, quarterback Justin Fields had to learn a brand-new playbook. But according to the outspoken Christian, the most important reading he does every day involves Scripture.

Fields, drafted by Chicago in 2021, is gearing up for his fifth NFL season. Since then, the QB has gained maturity and poise—and made some important realizations in the past six months.

Following a joint practice with the New York Giants this week, Fields, 26, was asked how he’s been able to “handle the outside noise” of playing on football’s biggest stage. His answer focused on his growing relationship with God—and included an open invitation for other people to learn more.

QB Justin Fields Applies the Bible to Everyday Life

Justin Fields, a former standout at Ohio State, was quick to credit his growth and maturity to “getting closer to God.” A big part of that, he told reporters, involves “reading the Bible every day” and “being real.”

About Scripture, the quarterback said, “There’s some great lines, some great wisdom that I didn’t even know of.” Fields described himself as being “low-key addicted to, like, getting into my Bible each and every day, just because I learn something new every day and I’m able to apply it to my everyday life.”

The new Jets QB admitted he wishes he had “started earlier” with his Bible reading. “I was sleeping on reading the Bible earlier in my life,” he admitted. “So I encourage you all to…go read a little bit, starting in Proverbs and move on from there.”

‘God Controls Everything,’ Says QB Justin Fields

Quarterback Justin Fields also credited his stronger relationship with God for improving his attitude. Now he realizes, “I don’t play for anybody’s approval,” and he no longer takes criticism from reporters and fans personally.

“It doesn’t really affect life [from] the bigger perspective,” Fields said about football and fame. “God controls everything that happens in this world.”

The QB said he used to let other people’s opinions affect and shape him. “I’m glad I’ve grown out of that stage,” he said. “I’m glad that the only approval that I need is from my teammates, my coaches and, you know, God ultimately.”
