Outward pressure to “perform” is not what pastors need right now. I want to share some things I’ve observed in what I am calling truly joyful pastors.

If we are going to fully trust God, it’s vital that we believe in a happy God who cares deeply for our welfare and is active in creation and redemption.

Even for the devout, distractions abound during this season of celebration. Preparations for an unprecedented day of feasting, complications of travel, and even engagement in the complexities of family relationships can draw us away from a focused heart of gratitude. A right-brain oriented small group ministry opts to have their groups meet and seek fellowship with one another and explore curriculum through the context of relationships that bring the joy of small groups.

Along with the great joy from this season, it was also full of pain. And it’s hit on many levels. In them all I learned what it meant to be sorrowful but rejoicing.

Only if we truly want to experience the happiness-driven desires of our hearts will we be drawn to God by verses such as this: “Seek your happiness in the Lord, and he will give you your heart’s desire” (Psalm 37:4).
